Gradska Kavana (City Café) is located in the heart of the medieval city walls. Originally it was a place for sewing sails and shipyard (12th century), and in 1930 the citizens decided to renovate the space and convert it into the City coffee house which became one of the most beautiful places in the city.
The Arsenal was situated on the premises of today's Gradska Kavana (City Café). It was composed of 4 vaulted sections for the 4 galleys that protected the city. The state defence galleys were built, guarded and repaired here. It was established very early, perhaps already by the 8th century. During its long existence, it was adapted many times, until it finally received its current appearance as the favourite coffee house for the people of Dubrovnik.
Today it is even more attractive with a mixture of history and tradition. As in ancient times, it still provides a special atmosphere - Viennese Secession ceremony with Mediterranean flair with nearby Stradun or the Old Port. This is a special gathering place for locals and foreign visitors offering a variety of drinks, cocktails and desserts and organized events such as masquerade, balls and a variety of entertainment.
This is a place where visitors "take a walk" through the centuries and enjoy extraordinary tastes of top-quality food and drinks, and the secret is guarded in the old recipes and carefully selected local ingredients.
