Dubrovnik, Croatia

The Pearl of Adriatic

Dubrovnik, “the Pearl of Adriatic”, is a city in the Croatian region of Dalmatia. A magnificent historic city founded in the 7th century traces its roots to the ancient world. It used to be an important Mediterranean sea power from the 13th century onwards. It was the only city-state on the entire Croatian coast from the 14th to the 19th century. Dubrovnik is one of the most prominent tourist destinations in the Mediterranean, a seaport and the centre of Dubrovnik-Neretva County. The town's name is derived from dubrava, which means "oak grove" (dub means "oak" in Croatian). In 1979, the city of Dubrovnik joined the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. The city walls, which run almost 2 kilometres (1.2 miles) around the city, have been preserved to the present day. The walls of Dubrovnik have also been a popular filming site for the fictional city of King's Landing in the HBO television series, Game of Thrones.

"To reach Dubrovnik you can either go by car, bus, ship or plane. It is impossible to get to Dubrovnik by train, the closest you can get is Ploce." (https://www.dubrovnikcity.com/dubrovnik/gettingto.htm)
